“We are at a fascinating stage where the fusion of archaeological and historical research will more accurately explain the events of 275 years ago, giving us a greater insight into a place which the National Trust for Scotland is proud to play its part in protecting. They are passionate about the history of Culloden Battlefield and are always learning new things about this amazing site which we can then share with the public who care so deeply about this important place. They will especially focus on the Cumberland boulder – a large marker where the Duke of Cumberland, leader of the government side, supposedly ate a meal on the morning of the battle. In previous years the most detailed site investigations have focused around the area of Old Leanach Cottage, also on the government side of the battle.Īrchaeologists are hoping the latest search will uncover personal artefacts among the topsoil such as buttons and buckles as well as lead musket and pistol shots.ĭrone and digital photography will also be used to make 3D models of the Culloden monument, battlefield markers and the many clan gravestones.
